Mobile Phones Not Linked To Brain Cancer Risk, Study Claims

Mon, 07 Dec 2009

New research published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute has revealed that the use of mobile phones does not increase the risk of cancer developing in the brain.

A study conducted by the Danish Cancer Society in Copenhagen found that trends in brain cancer rates amongst adults from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden have not changed since mobiles were introduced in the mid-nineties.

The scientists analysed 59,684 brain tumour cases that were diagnosed among 16 million mean and women in the Nordic countries between 1974 and 2003.

They found that there was no increase in the annual incidence rates of two of the most common types of brain cancer - glioma and meningioma – in the years following the introduction of mobile phones (1998 to 2003), suggesting the use of mobiles does not increase the risk of the disease in the short or medium term.

However, the Danish scientists warned that further long-term research would be needed to back up their findings as their research did not take into account how often people used their mobile handsets .

Isabelle Deltour, the leader of the study, said: "Our results extend those of previous studies of time trends up to 1998 by adding five years of follow-up."

"Because of the high prevalence of mobile phone exposure in this population and worldwide, longer follow-up of time trends in brain tumour incidence rates are warranted."

Dr Alison Ross, senior science information officer for Cancer Research UK, said: "Overall, the scientific evidence tells us that using mobile phones for less than 10 years does not increase the risk of cancer and this large study supports that conclusion."

"However, brain tumours often take a very long time to develop so we will need to look for any future changes in incidence rates to see if mobile phones could pose any longer-term risks."
