Orange is expecting mobile users to go text crazy this Christmas and create a new record for the number of texts and picture messages sent and received by its UK customers.
Last year, more than 100 million festive texts were sent by Orange users on Christmas Day and the mobile phone operator expects this number to increase this year due to a number of factors including the availability of unlimited text bundles and the cold wintry weather.
Orange said it also predicts an increase in the number of picture messages that will be sent from mobile phones this Christmas.
Christmas 2008 saw more than one million picture messages sent on the Orange network and the mobile company believes this number will rise by 10 per cent to 1.1 million on Friday.
More text messages are also expected to sent on December 31st than the same day last year, with Orange forecasting a record-breaking 120 million texts wishing people A Happy New Year.
In a statement, Orange said: "Millions of text and MMS get sent across the Orange network every day, but at Christmas and New Year the numbers rise as customers share their greetings and snapshots of their dodgy Christmas jumpers."
An estimated 500 million texts will be sent across all mobile networks in the UK over Christmas.
