Mobile phone users are becoming increasingly confused, frustrated and angry by the complexity of new handsets, a new study has revealed.
Research carried out by consultants at Mformation found that 45 per cent of those in the UK and the US have decided against upgrading to the latest mobile handsets because of concerns over the complex setups involved.
Some 85 per cent of the 4,000 mobile users polled from both sides of the Atlantic said they were frustrated by the difficulty of getting a new phone to work, while 95 per cent said they would try new data services if they were less complicated to setup.
Furthermore, 61 per cent of respondents said setting up a new handset was as challenging as moving bank accounts.
Commenting on the findings, Mformation spokesman Matthew Bancroft said: "The message from consumers is that phone setup is simply too complex. Clearly, this needs to be addressed"
"There is an enormous range of things modern phones are capable of doing but the paradox is that many people are not using these capabilities."
Mr Bancroft added that many users were also keen to make the most of the latest applications and services such as web browning, email access and sending instant messages .
But he claimed that people quickly lose interest in such applications if they do not work immediately without any hassles.
Mformation is calling for industry work on standards for basic handset operations to help improve the situation.
