Motorola Unveils Recyclable Mobile

Wed, 07 Jan 2009

Motorola has unveiled a new eco-friendly mobile phone, which it claims is the world’s first carbon neutral handset and made completely out of recycled materials.

The Moto W233 Renew is produced using plastic from recycled water bottles and is itself 100 per cent recyclable . Motorola have also partnered with non-profit organisation Carbonfund.org to carbon-offset the CO2 produced in the W233's manufacturing and distribution process.

In addition, the W233's packaging will consist of recycled materials, while a postage-paid envelope will allow users to return their old mobile phone for recycling for free.

Motorola’s corporate vice president of global marketing, Jim Dale said the phone should prove a popular choice for consumers.

"From the product's design, to the packaging to our partnership with Carbonfund.org, we wanted to ensure that this device makes the right impact with consumers and the environment," he said.

The mobile comes equipped with an MP3 player, a 128 x 128 pixel CSTN display and up to 2GB of memory, but lacks standard mobile features such as Bluetooth and a camera.

The green handset weighs just 83 grams and provides up to 9 hours talktime . Motorola say that the relatively long battery life will reduce power consumption as the device won’t need to be charged as often as other mobiles .

Motorola is due to launch the W233 Renew during the first quarter of this year, although it will only be available to US customers on T Mobile tariffs for the time being.

Last year the mobile phone manufacturer saw its position in the global handset market fall due to a weak product line-up. The company’s last batch of phones were criticised for failing to include latest trends such as touchscreen interfaces and high-speed data links.
