Nokia Reveals UK Launch Date For Tube Smartphone

Nokia has announced that it’s first-ever touchscreen mobile device, the 5800 XpressMusic, will be launched in the UK on January 23rd.

A sim-free version of the ‘Tube’ handset will be exclusively available from 10am at both the company’s flagship stores in Regent Street and Heathrow’s Terminal 5, at a cost of £249.

Customers can pre-order the touchscreen smartphone from the Nokia website, which will also retail the phone from the start of next month.

Furthermore, the 5800 XpressMusic will be available on contract price plans from Vodafone, O2, Orange, T-Mobile UK, Virgin Mobile, Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4U from January 30th.

The 5800 was originally announced by Nokia in August and was expected to be released on 2 October as the Finnish manufacturer's long-awaited touchscreen rival to the Apple iPhone .

Like the iPhone, the mobile phone features a 3.2-inch widescreen display that allows input from fingers, a stylus pen or plectrum.

The touchscreen interface also includes tactile feedback to help users confirm button and key clicks, a dedicated media bar for easy access to music, maps, and other multimedia applications, and an-board QWERTY keyboard for typing messages and emails .

Living up to its XpressMusic title, the handset boasts high-quality built-in surround-sound speakers, a 3.5mm jack for supporting headphones, and promises 35 hours of music playback. However, Nokia has not yet confimred whether the device will be compatible with its Comes With Music download service.

Other impressive features of the Nokia ‘Tube’ include a 3.2 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom and high-qulaity video capture, GPS and 8GB of storage space (upgradeable to 16GB).
