Hyundai Mobile Scraps UK Mobile Plans

Wed, 15 Jul 2009

Hyundai's plans to enter the UK mobile phone market have been dropped following the collapse of its UK distribution partner, Advantage Cellular.

Oxfordshire-based Hyundai Mobile UK was due to enter the competitive UK market in the first half of 2009, starting with the launch of the Hyundai MB-910 watch phone, but its ambitions were severely dented after Advantage Cellular went into administration in March.

Although bosses have been trying to find a replacement partner, their efforts have been hindered by the tough economic climate and the company is now understood to have "ditched" its mobile plans "for the foreseeable future".

Graham Jelfs, chief executive of Hyundai Mobile UK, said: "It's really sad after all the hard work that we're not able to launch as planned."

"The excellent PR campaign led to numerous phone calls and emails from consumers requesting our products".

"Unfortunately, the global economical situation prevented it all from coming together."

Hyundai Mobile already sells branded mobile phones in several European countries. In addition to a reasonably low-cost watch phone, the manufacturer was also planning to release a mobile handset shaped like a dolphin, based on the rationale, "everyone likes dolphins".
