O2 Offers Free Twitter Service To UK Users

Tue, 21 Jul 2009

Mobile operator O2 has confirmed that its customers will be able to convert Twitter updates to text messages starting next month.

From August 1st, subscribers to the network will have the possibility of receiving text notifications and direct messages free of charge.

Furthermore, customers will also be able to update their Twitter profiles for the same price of a standard SMS message, or as part of O2’s normal text message bundles .

Although the service is offered for free, the company’s fair use policy for Twitter texts means users will be limited to 600 messages per month.

O2’s Twitter service follows a similar move from rival firm Vodafone, which recently opened its network up to the hugely popular social networking site.

Commenting on the move, Antony Douglas, head of content at O2, said: "We believe that mobile will soon become the most popular way of accessing social networking sites, giving real time access to tweets and status updates wherever you are."

"The agreements we now have in place with Twitter and the other key sites bring this a step closer, making it quick and easy for O2 customers to access their favourite social networks straight from their mobile ."

Meanwhile, the UK’s largest mobile network operator has also announced plans to enter the world of personal finance with the launch of two new prepaid cash cards .

The Visa cards can be loaded with cash in stores or via the internet and then used to buy goods and services in shops and online. Each time they are used, customers will be sent text updates to their mobile phone informing them of how much credit they have left.

The fee-free Cash Manager card will be offered to O2 customers by the end of next month, while a second card - Load and Go – will be aimed at teenagers.
