Mobile Phone Directory Hit By Technical Glitches

Mon, 13 Jul 2009

A controversial mobile phone directory has crashed just a few days after launching after thousand of users scrambled to get their mobile details removed from the service's online database.

A notice released on Friday stated that the high number of queries the 118 800 service had received since launching "highlighted some technical glitches in the system".

"To ensure 118 800 provides faultless customer service the decision has been made to temporarily suspend the service allowing for technical work to be completed," the notice added.

However, reports suggest the site failed to recover over the weekend as it remains offline, with the homepage currently displaying a message which reads "back as soon as possible with the new improved service".

118 800 launched less than a month ago, allowing users to request a name and mobile number of any given person for £1.

However, the service has proved controversial after it was revealed that Connectivity, the company behind 118 800, had sourced most of its directory from marketing lists held by other companies.

Many Britons have been trying desperately to change their mobile number to ex-directory, while some have even called for Ofcom or the Information Commissioner’s Office to reappraise the fairness of the 118 800 mobile phone directory .

Connectivity has reassured users that all requests to be removed from the directory’s database "are being dealt with", despite the technical hiccup.
