Mobile manufacturers have reached a voluntary agreement to adopt a universal charging system for all mobile handsets .
Ten of the most popular mobile phone producers, including giants Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Apple, LG, Samsung and Motorola, have signed up to offer a new charger, which will be based on a micro-USB connector.
The European Commission has been pushing mobile companies to work on harmonising phone chargers in the EU in a bid to reduce waste.
It said the multitude of different types of charger currently available creates thousands of tonnes of unnecessary electronic waste a year and threatened to introduce legislation unless a voluntary deal was reached.
The agreement, which is not legally binding, states that the introduction of a standardised charger will improve energy efficiency, reduce energy consumption and save mobile users money as they will no longer need to buy a new charger to go with a new phone .
The EU industry commissioner, Günter Verheugen, said the move would make life much simpler for consumers.
"They will be able to charge mobile phones anywhere from the new common charger," he said.
"This also means considerably less electronic waste because people will no longer have to throw away chargers when buying new phones ."
The first generation of "inter-chargeable" mobile phones are expected to hit stores across Europe from 2010.
