3 Unveils First GBP0 Mobile Contract

Mon, 15 Jun 2009

Mobile phone operator 3 is set to launch the UK's first £0 a month SIM -only contract service.

From June 17, customers will be able to sign up for the Sim Zero tariff, which offers unlimited Skype -to-Skype calls and instant messaging free of charge.

Customers will also get free use of Windows Live Messenger and free voicemail in the UK for the one month minimum term contract, and will also have the option of leaving the contract at any time (after the first month) with only one month's notice.

However, standard phone calls, texts and data rates will be charged at considerably higher rates than on a standard 3 mobile phone contract - 20p per minute for all calls, 10p per text and 30p per MB of data.

Andy Nuttall, head of pay monthly at 3, said the deal will appeal to cash-strapped consumers who are looking to reduce their monthly expenditure and who are not in favour of committing to a long-term contract .

He commented: "Where once the £35 a month contract was commonplace, prices are now falling. Some networks have gone as low as £5, but are handcuffing customers to a three-year commitment.

"We want to challenge the market and change mobile forever, that’s why we are offering a UK first - a contract that costs nothing but gives you free calls forever with Skype ."

"Sim Zero has minimal ties. Customers can try us out and if they don't love being with us, they can leave with just one month’s notice."

To make the most of free Skype on 3, the network recommends customers use the SIM in a 3 handset such as the INQ1 or the 3 Skypephone S2 .
