HTC Unveil Hero Android Phone

Mon, 29 Jun 2009

HTC has unveiled its latest Google Android device, the HTC Hero, which will be available on both the Orange and T-Mobile networks when it goes on sale in the UK next month.

At a press event in London last Wednesday, the Taiwanese manufacturer showed off its third Android handset, which is the first to feature the company’s new user interface called Sense.

The Sense UI allows users to customise the device to their needs and communicate with friends and colleagues quicker and efficiently, whether by Facebook, email, text or through a phone call .

Spec wise, the HTC Hero boasts a range of features including a 3.2-inch HVGA touch screen with an antifingerprint screen coating, GPS, a 5-megapixel camera, an MP3 player, HSPDA, Wi-Fi, a digital compass and a microSD expansion slot.

There is also a 3.5mm headphone jack, a dedicated search button to allow for a more contextual search and even support for Flash.

The smartphone keeps the distinctive "chin" feature of the HTC G1 and Magic handsets, but doesn’t include the slide-out keyboard of its fellow Android phones, giving it a "squarer" profile.

HTC chief executive Peter Chou said: "HTC Hero introduces a more natural way for reaching out to people and accessing your important information, not by following the status quo of today's phones, but by following how you communicate and live your life.

"HTC Sense is a distinct experience created to make HTC phones more simple for people to use, leaving them saying, ‘it just makes sense’."

Orange said the Teflon coated-mobile will be the "first of several" Android handsets to be launched on its network this year and will be available from free on a £39.15, 24-month contract with 1,200 inclusive minutes, unlimited texts and internet browsing.

T-Mobile customers will also have access to the device from mid-July, although it will go by the name of the T-Mobile G1 Touch. T-mobile is launching the Hero/G1 Touch on a £40 a month Flext contract .
