Sony Ericsson Goes Green With Launch Of Eco Phones

Mon, 08 Jun 2009

Sony Ericsson has announced the launch of the C901 GreenHeart and Naite mobile handsets, the first of its new eco-friendly GreenHeart line.

The phones are designed to reduce carbon emissions through the use of recycled materials, reduced packaging and waterborne paints.

Both mobile devices will feature a range of built-in eco applications, including a carbon footprint calculator called the WalkMate pedometer, which allows users to work out just how much CO2 they save through walking as opposed to other forms of transport, and an optimised display light sensor that uses less energy .

Each will also comes with a low-power battery charger and an e-manual – a manual which is embedded into the phone to cut paper usage.

In terms of the more traditional specs, the C901 (based on the existing C901 which is yet to be released in the UK) will feature a 5-megapixel camera with Xenon flash and Smile detection capability, Bluetooth, a media player, and email functionality.

Both the C901 and Naite are quad-band GSM handsets, although the C901 only supports non-US 3G networks.

Sony Ericsson president Dick Komiyama said: "Sony Ericsson has worked continuously to become an industry leader in the arena of removing harmful substances from the core of its phones and in creating industry leading energy efficient chargers ."

"Today we are announcing the next step in our strategy, the GreenHeart pioneer products, which launch with two innovative new phones and a commitment to roll these innovations across the broader portfolio in 2010 and 2011, allowing us to build a more sustainable business."

The C901 is scheduled to be released at the end of this month, while the Naite is expected to hit retailers by Q3. Pricing and network availability details for both are yet to be confirmed.
