UKs First Mobile Phone Directory To Launch Next Week

Wed, 10 Jun 2009

A mobile directory enquiry service is being launched in the UK for the first time.

The 118 800 service, set to launch on June 18, will allow people to search for the mobile numbers of people whose number they don’t know at a cost of £1 per search.

More than 15 million numbers (of people verified as being over 18 years old) will be stored in the directory’s database, which will be available online at www.118800.co.uk or by calling 118 800.

Through the online directory, the person being searched for will receive a text message with the enquirer’s contact details.

The telephone service enables the recipient to accept or decline a call from the enquirer. If the number goes to voicemail, 118 800 leaves a voicemail or text message with the contact details.

However, unlike traditional telephone directory service, the mobile phone directory will require people to feed in name, surname, as well as location of the users in order to find their mobile numbers .

Mobile phone users who do not want their details to be listed on the database can opt out of the service by simply texting 'E' to 118800 from their mobile handset or calling 0800 138 6263.

Connectivity, the start-up firm behind the service, said the service has been launched in response to research which showed nearly two-thirds of people favour a service which enables mobile listings.

The company stressed that despite concerns from privacy campaigners, the system won’t breach mobile users’ privacy rights and added that it has been given the go-ahead to launch the service from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
