Wed, 04 Mar 2009

Mobile network O2 has announced that UK sales of the iPhone exceeded the one million mark in the last quarter, 16 months since it signed an exclusive agreement with Apple in November 2007.

The Telefonica -owned network revealed that despite the economic downturn, annual sales were up 10.6 per cent in 2008, mainly due to its landline and mobile broadband push, as well as the success of its top end products including BlackBerry and iPhone handsets .

The company also highlighted the growth of its pay as you go offers, which include its "Simplicity" deals and iPhone PAYG deal for £342.33.

O2 signed up 390.000 new mobile users in the last quarter of 2008, which brought its total UK customer base to 19.5 million, strengthening its position as Britain’s number one network .

It also achieved a four-fold increase in its total broadband customer base (landline and mobile), selling more than 270,000 mobile broadband connections .

Despite the good news, Matthew Key, Chairman and Chief Executive of Telefonica Europe, warned: "While our results appear to be bucking economic trends, we remain concerned about the current trading environment which has resulted in an overall smaller market.

"In times like these, execution becomes even more critical in offering customers services and propositions that they value."
