Unlocked iPhones On Sale At Play.com

Wed, 25 Mar 2009

Online retailer Play.com has begun offering fully unlocked and SIM free versions of the popular Apple iPhone .

Both the 8GB and 16GB versions are available on the website, priced at £549.99 and £599.99 respectively. The handsets are only available in black and come with free delivery.

The move marks the first time that new unlocked iPhones have been offered legally, meaning the handsets carry a full manufacturer's warranty.

Analysts suggest the offering is a strong indication that Apple intends to launch a new iPhone model this summer.

On their website, Play.com states that the iPhone devices and unlocked to all UK networks and is available "due to EU legislation ensuring the sale of SIM free mobile phones" .

The move comes a few days after network operator O2 confirmed that it would be cutting the entry price of the iPhone contract by just under £10 – from £44.05 to £34.26 per month.

iPhone suppliers in other countries have also made significant changes to their pricing structures as they seek to clear their stock of the old iPhone models in readiness for the marketing build-up of the widely rumoured new iPhone device.
