Hundreds of mobile phone users across the UK have been caught up in an on-going insurance scam, according to a report by the BBC.
Trading Standards claim fraudsters, based mainly in the Swansea area of south Wales, are selling invalid cover to people who have recently purchased a new mobile handset .
According to the BBC, the firms are calling new owners and posing as representatives of the shop or network from which they purchased the phone .
Customers are offered the chance to take out cheap phone insurance just hours after buying a new mobile . But after providing the fraudsters with their bank and credit card details, they find themselves left with invalid or poor-quality cover, or none at all.
Trading Standards is urging people not to give details to cold callers as it seeks to investigate ten companies based in Swansea that are believed to have been operating for the past 18 months.
The scammers involved are thought to be buying phones and calling numbers similar to their own number until they find someone with a new mobile .
