Orange and O2 may refuse to stock the upcoming Nokia N97 unless the Finnish handset manufacturer removes the pre-installed Skype VoIP software, which lets users make free calls .
The operators are reportedly "furious" with Nokias plans to pre-load the Skype service onto its much-anticipated flagship mobile as they fear its inclusion could damage their voice call revenue.
Nokia announced last month that it will install the VoIP software onto N97 handsets and integrate it into the phone's address book, enabling users to make a call or send a text message over the internet and not through the network provider.
The companies reaction has come as a surprise given the huge success that mobile operator 3 has had with its two Skypephone handsets.
According to Mobiletoday, 3 and T-Mobile have already confirmed their support for Skype on Nokias Neries devices, while Nokia is awaiting clarification from Vodafone on the controversial issue.
The Nokia N97 touchscreen smartphone is due to be released in the UK in June.
