Vodafone Scraps Roaming Charges For The Summer

Mon, 18 May 2009

Vodafone UK has announced it will abolish mobile roaming charges across Europe this summer, meaning customers will be able to chat, text and MMS while abroad at no extra charge.

The mobile giant is offering all its existing UK customers, who register for its free Passport service, the same rates for making calls from 35 countries within the EU as they would usually pay in the UK. The offer will also include text and picture messages .

The promotional period will will start on June 1st, and run until the end of August.

Ian Shepherd, Vodafone UK’s consumer director, said: "Normally what our Passport tariff does is allow you to take your UK tariff overseas and charges a set-up fee - we're waiving that fee."

"With our promotion you can sit on the beach with your phone switched on knowing you can take and make a call just as you would if you were in your back garden."

He added: "We want to give great value to existing customers and others a great reason to join Vodafone ."

Vodafone UK said it expects the offer to be "especially popular" with families taking breaks abroad this summer.

The landmark move by Vodafone comes in advance of a limit on international roaming charges set by the European Parliament, which will be introduced at the start of July.

The new charges set strict limits on mobile termination rates - the amount that mobile operators across Europe charge one another to access their networks.

Vodafone pay monthly customers can sign up to the free Passport service by texting the word ‘Passport’ to 97888, while Pay as You Go customers with the mobile operator can send it to 2345.
