More than 30,000 iPhones were sold to Orange customers on the first day of the phones release on the mobile network - a new UK record for first day sales of a mobile handset .
According to Orange, the record-breaking figure of 30,000 sales was achieved by 4pm on Tuesday, the day which finally marked the end of the two-year exclusivity deal between rival operator O2 and iPhone maker Apple.
The impressive first day performance came despite concerns that demand for the handset would be hit by Oranges decision to keep iPhone tariffs in line with those currently offered by O2 .
Instead of focusing on price, Orange is promising customers that it offers better network coverage than any of its rivals.
The company is offering the latest version of the iPhone, the iPhone 3G S, for free on 24-month contract deals starting at £45 per month.
Andrew Harrison, CEO of high street retailer Carphone Warehouse, predicted that the launch of the hugely popular device on Orange will push the companys total iPhone sales "past the one million mark".
The Apple iPhone will also be launched on the Vodafone network in early 2010.
