New research has revealed that a fifth of Britains mobile owners are using their handset(s) to access the internet, meaning there are now over 10 million mobile web surfers in the UK.
According to research firm Nielsen, the most popular mobile internet activity is finding out the latest news including football scores and travel updates, followed by downloading applications.
Around 600,000 UK residents have switched to the latest smartphones over the last few months, taking the number of smartphone users to 6.2 million, Nielsen said.
Blackberry handsets are the fastest growing smartphone devices, accounting for 19 per cent of the market but still some way behind market leader Nokia with 44 per cent.
A report by mobile research firm Mobilesquared recently claimed that mobile internet connections will surpass fixed line connections by 2011.
The company said it expects there to be around 200,000 more mobile internet users than fixed line, with a large percentage of mobile web traffic coming from business users.
