Sony Ericssons flagship handset, the Satio smartphone, has been temporarily removed from the UK's largest mobile phone retailers .
Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U both suspended sales of the new mobile after unusually high levels of customers returned the phone to their stores, complaining of various problems with the handset.
Sony Ericsson said the issue is due to a software glitch and stressed that it was "giving this matter its utmost priority and working toward solving it".
Both Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U said customers experiencing problems with their handset could exchange it for a new phone .
Sony Ericsson had hoped that the launch of the Satio, which includes a 12.1 megapixel camera, would allow it to compete more effectively in the lucrative smartphone market and help boost its fortunes following a year of losses.
Carolina Milanesi, lead mobile phone analyst at Garner, said the issue with the device was a "really big blow" for the mobile phone manufacturer, which was "counting on the Satio to boost its Christmas sales ."
She added that the negative publicity could damage the companys image and have a major impact on sales of its future smartphones, including the upcoming Google Android -based Xperia X10.
