O2 Goes Green With Launch Of Sony Ericsson Naite

Mon, 12 Oct 2009

The eco-friendly Sony Ericsson Naite mobile phone has arrived in the UK, exclusive to O2 .

The handset, which Sony claims as a 15 percent reduced carbon footprint in comparison to a standard mobile, is now available to purchase on both prepay and pay monthly tariffs from O2 .

Part of Sony Ericsson’s new range of GreenHart mobiles, the phone is constructed largely from recyclable materials and comes with a low-power charger, reduced packaging and an electronic instruction manual, which reduces paper usage by 90 per cent.

An educational application called Ecomate is also pre-installed in the phone, which aims to teach buyers about environmental concerns

Other features of the Naite include a 2.2-inch LCD display, a 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, 3G connectivity, an FM radio and microSD expansion to boost the 100MB internal memory.

The Sony Ericsson Naite is available for free on 18-month and 24-month contracts, or for just under £100 on Pay and Go from O2 .

As an added incentive, O2 is offering all Naite buyers a free gift worth £150, ranging from a solar powered charger to "ethically sourced" food hampers.

Alternatively, customers can chose to make a donation towards primary education for a child in Bangladesh, tree planting in Ethiopia, or towards the construction of a water system in Africa.

Sally Cowdry, O2’s marketing director, said: "The Naite is a key part of our strategy to bringing products and services to our customers which can help them reduce their energy consumption ."

"It’s about making their decision to buy a greener device easy with an affordable and feature-packed phone, but which also has a greatly reduced carbon footprint ."
