Motorola Unveils First Android-Powered Smartphone

Tue, 15 Sep 2009

Motorola, the struggling US mobile phone manufacturer, has unveiled the first of a new range of smartphones that will run on Google’s Android platform.

The Motorola Cliq will be the company’ first Android phone to launch, hitting US stores next month before making its way to the UK, where it will be branded the Motorola Dext and sold exclusively on the Orange network.

Aimed at heavy social network users, the mobile device features a custom user interface called the "MotoBlur", which provides integrated support for most major social networks.

Motorola claims the Dext is the first handset to provide live feeds for Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, Gmail and Yahoo on the homescreen.

In addition to the social features, the phone comes equipped with a 3.1-inch touchscreen display with 320 x 240 resolution - the same as the iPhone - and a slide-out mini-keyboard with a multidirectional pad.

There’s also a 5-megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi, HSDPA, a3.5mm headphone jack and a 2GB micro SD card .

Sanjay Jha, chief executive of Motorola Mobile Devices, said: "The Motorola CLIQ with Motorblur differentiates the Android experience for consumers by being the only smartphone that automatically syncs conversations, contacts and content, and delivers a solution that’s instinctive, social and smart."

The company hopes the new range of Android phones will revive its fortunes and regain the market share lost to rivals like Apple, Nokia and Samsung .
