Pre Smartphone Fails To Prevent Further Losses For Palm

Mon, 21 Sep 2009

Palm has announced losses for the eight consecutive quarter, despite the initial success of its flagship Palm Pre smartphone which launched earlier this year.

The company reported that it made a net loss of $164 million (£100 million) - four times the losses compared to the same period last year.

The losses come despite Palm selling 823, 000 mobile handsets during the last quarter, beating analysts' expectations of 700,000 - 800,000 phone sales and representing a 134 per cent increase on the previous quarter.

With strong sales set to continue, the mobile maker is still confident that the Palm will turn around its fortunes in the coming months.

Jon Rubinstein, Palm’s chairman and chief executive, said in a statement: "We’re making significant progress with Palm's transformation, and our culture of innovation is stronger than ever."

"We’re launching more great Palm WebOS products with more carriers, and turning our sights toward growth."

The Palm Pre smartphone was released in the US in June and is set to go on sale in the UK in the next month or two, exclusively on the O2 network .

Palm also announced it will stop developing new phones running Windows Mobile software, instead focusing future development on its new WebOS operating system.
