Samsung Mobile App Store Goes Live

Samsung has officially launched its online mobile application store in the UK, as it looks to follow in the footsteps of Apple’s hugely successful iTunes Apps Store.

The new Samsung Apps service, which is initially limited to owners of the Samsung Omnia i8910 mobile handset, offers users the chance to download 300 free and paid for applications from the usual range of categories including games, social networking, eBooks and productivity tools.

The number of applications available is expected to rise to 2,000 before the end of the year, while support for more phones, such as the newly announced Omnia II and Omnia Lite, is also expected before the start of 2010 the year.

Users can download by WiFi or over-the-air connections, and can pay for their apps by credit card . Support for phone billing will also become available in the near future.

Hosoo Lee, Executive Vice President of Samsung’s Media Solution Center, said: "With the launch of the Application Store Samsung will increase mobile phone sales and add value for its mobile customers through the availability of carefully selected applications."

"The Application Store will expand the service channel, not only on handheld devices but also on PCs through the launch of new PC software . "

The software portal is currently available in the UK, France and Italy, and will soon be launched in more than 30 countries, including Germany and Spain .

To get the new Application store, Samsung Omnia users need to download a software update application via their PC .
