Vodafone Abandons UK Launch Of Xperia X2

Mon, 11 Jan 2010

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 smartphone will not be launching in the UK after mobile phone operator Vodafone dropped its plans to add the handset to its mobile range.

Vodafone was lined up to be the exclusive carrier of Sony Ericsson's new flagship Windows Mobile phone, but the company confirmed last week that it would "not be ranging" the X2 device in the UK.

In a statement, the mobile network giant said: "The delivery date of the device, with Windows 6.5, slipped pre-Christmas due to a series of technical issues, and we have taken the decision not to go ahead with the launch as it no longer fits with our planned portfolio."

Commenting on the move, Sony Ericsson said: "The delivery date of the product has slipped due to extended testing."

"Sony Ericsson is disappointed not to make this phone available to consumers in the UK but 2010 will see the company offering a number of innovative, stand-out products in the market".

The Xperia X2 smartphone was originally supposed to have launched in Britain at the end of October 2009, but its release date was put back to this month.

Reports suggest Vodafone will now focus on the more lucrative Android market, with the Nexus One smartphone from Google set to launch on the network over the coming weeks.
