Google Unveils Nexus One Smartphone

Google has officially launched the Nexus One smartphone, the latest mobile handset to go head to head with the Apple iPhone .

The highly anticipated launch took place at the company’s headquarters yesterday in Mountain View, California, and comes after weeks of speculation about Google’s first official mobile phone device.

Designed in partnership with mobile maker HTC, the Nexus One handest runs on the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system (Android. Version 2.1), which offers fully integrated web-browsing and access to more than 18,000 Google apps .

The Andopid software also provides enhanced voice control, with a voice enabled keyboard included for speaking text messages, emails, tweets and Facebook updates, and GPS software for Google Maps and Google Street View.

In terms of hardware, the phone comes equipped with a 3.7-inch AMOLED display, a 5-megapixel digital camera with LED flash and the ability to record video in MPEG 4 format, a Qualcomm snapdragon 1GHz processor, and up to 32GB of expandable memory.

Like the iPhone, the Nexus One includes both an accelerometer and digital compass. It also features two microphones which cancel out background noise to allow for clearer calls in noisy environments.

The Google Nexus One smartphone is expected to be available in the UK within the next few weeks on the Vodafone network.

A spokesperson for the company said that it will be the first operator to carry the mobile in the UK but stressed that its agreement wqith Google was "non-exclusive", meaning other networks could also offer the phone .
