Mobile Users Wasting Billions On Unused Calls And Texts

Wed, 20 Jan 2010

Mobile phone users in the UK are wasting nearly £13 billion a year on unused minutes and texts, according to new research by moneysupermarket.com.

The price comparison site’s annual Mobile Money Report found that contract customers are the most wasteful with their monthly allowance, with nearly half (45 per cent) of their mobile tariff's minutes and text allowance left unused each month.

According to the report, the average pay monthly mobile user wastes £250 a year on contract costs – equal to an average of 137 minutes and 153 texts every month, or 27 hours and 1836 texts a year.

The latest Mobile Money research shows that the situation is worsening, with UK adults now wasting up to 40 per cent more minutes and twice as many text messages as they were in 2007.

Commenting on the findings, Mike Wilson, manager of mobiles and broadband at moneysupermarket.com, said: "With a rise in the popularity of the iPhone and other smartphones with increased capabilities and internet access, the allowance of texts and minutes on a tariff has become less important."

"With these other considerations taking priority, people are wasting more texts and minutes than ever before."

"It's great that consumers are under their monthly allowance to avoid any extra costs, but it's also important to get the most out of your contract for what you pay each month," he added.

"One of the best ways to do this is to asses what your monthly usage is and find a contract that suits you best.
