Mobile phone theft is on the rise in the UK, with new research showing that some three million handsets have been stolen to date.
A study by life assistance company CPP revealed that mobile phone owners in Sheffield are most likely to be victims of theft, with some 11 per cent of the citys residents having had their phones stolen.
The second worst city for mobile thefts is Edinburgh, where nine per cent of people have had their mobile handsets snatched, followed by London (8 per cent).
The research also revealed the most common methods used by phone thieves. A quarter of victims were pick-pocketed, a fifth had their phones taken from a pub or restaurant table, 10 per cent were mugged, and five per cent had their mobiles stolen while at work.
However, a number of phone users admitted carelessness on their part was the reason for their phone being stolen, with one in five being hit by thieves on more than one occasion.
Despite the increasing risk of mobile phone theft, the CPP said that almost two-thirds of Brits choose not to take out insurance on their valuable handsets.
Danny Harrison, head of mobile at CPP, said: " Mobile phones are an integral part of our day-to-day lives, and many would be lost without them."
"With Home Office figures suggesting that a staggering 228 mobiles are stolen every hour in the UK, mobile users need to remember that phone thieves will stop at nothing to get their hands on the latest handsets."
"We urge all mobile owners to keep their handsets safe when going out, to prevent theft and to also avoid being careless and losing them unnecessarily."
