Two of the UKs largest mobile phone companies Orange and T-Mobile have been given the green light with their planned merger .
The European Commission gave its approval to the companies to form one operator servicing approximately 30m customers.
The new company will be dominant in the UK with 37 per cent of the market, leading O2 by 10 per cent.
Tim Höttges, CFO of Deutsche Telekom, which operates T-Mobile said, "This is excellent news, for our customers, for our highly committed teams in the UK and for our shareholders."
The question that remains to be answered is job security for the 3,000 T-Mobile workers based at their national headquarters in Hatfield Business Park.
So far no comment has been made from either company.
The merger will take at least 18 months to complete and a spokesperson for T-Mobile said it was too early to say where the company will be based afterwards.
