O2 Gives Green Customers GBP1m For Recycled Mobiles

Wed, 17 Mar 2010

Mobile operator O2 has revealed that it has so far handed out a whopping £1 million in cash pay outs under its mobile phone recycling scheme, O2 Recycle .

The network provider’s eco-friendly scheme was launched in October in a bid to reduce the amount of old and unused phones being sent to landfill.

It works by offering customers a cash coupon or voucher in exchange for their old mobile, with £1 for every recycled device donated to O2’s Think Big social change programme.

The service is operated by phone recycling specialist Redeem Plc, which either reuses the old mobiles or recycles the devices if they are not suitable for re-use.

In the five months since its launch the mobile recycling programme has managed to generate a whopping £1 million for its eco-friendly customers.

Sally Cowdry, marketing director of O2 UK, said: "We are committed to embedding sustainability at the core of our business, bringing environmentally friendly products and services to our customers, and making it easier for them to do their bit for the environment."

"The fact that we have reached the 1 million mark so quickly is testament to the popularity of O2 Recycle ."

Redeem chief executive Jamie Rae added: "Breaking the million pound barrier within a few months of the launch is a huge achievement for all involved and testament to the increasing environmental awareness of consumers in the UK."

"By recycling electronic devices we avoid potentially toxic waste being released into our environment and create communication solutions for people in the developing world where infrastructure can be poor."
