Mobile phone operator 3 is reportedly preparing to expand its offering of Android-based handsets with the launch of six new Android phones over the next three months.
3, which currently only sells one handset powered by Google's Android operating system, the HTC Hero, said it plans to focus heavily on Android-based devices this year as it believes the mobile technology will help boost sales.
According to reports, some of the operators upcoming Android offerings will be Samsung and Sony Ericsson handsets.
David Kerrigan, head of internet services at 3 UK, added that the company will offer its customers Skype and Spotify applications on a large range of mobiles this year, particularly on low-end handsets in a bid to broaden their appeal. The mobile apps will also be integrated on all future Android devices.
"We are focussed heavily on providing our mobile internet-powered applications and will make them available to more people this year," Kerrigan explained.
"The Spotify application will be available on all Android devices we launch on the network. These applications have been important in driving mobile data and will be available as an add-on for all contract tariffs going forward."
