For many commuters there is nothing worse than hearing other peoples’ mobile phone conversations.
Now a German invention could stop the irritation suffered by many as mobile phones may soon be able to read lips.
The ‘silent communication’ works by measuring the tiny electrical signals produced by the muscles when a person speaks. Researchers have developed a device that records what a person says and generates a synthesised version elsewhere. This applies to inaudible sound also.
Professor Tanja Shultz of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology said she used to get irritated with use of mobile phones on trains, which gave her the inspiration for the research.
The device uses electromyography, usually used to diagnose nerve damage, and requires nine electrodes to be stuck on the users at present.
Professor Schultz acknowledged the technology is not for mass market use but could in the future be incorporated into a mobile phone handset .
The technology could also be used for those who have lost their voice, through illness or accidents, to speak through a computer .
