Nearly GBP195 Billion Wasted On Mobile Phone Bills

Mobile phone users in the UK are wasting an average of £195 a year on their mobile phone bills because they are on the wrong price plan, according to a new study.

The research by Billmonitor, an Ofcom approved bill-analysis service, found that just over three quarters (76 per cent) of people on pay monthly deals are collectively wasting nearly £5bn a year due to wrongly estimating how many minutes and text messages they would use.

Of those, it discovered that just over half (52 per cent) are on a tariff that's too large for them, using just a quarter of their monthly allowance, while 29 per cent are on too small a tariff, wasting money on calls, texts and data usage that exceeds their allowance.

The study also revealed that 19 per cent have the correct number of allowance minutes, but are still wasting money by not taking advantage of free benefits and allowance limits for data and texts .

Billmonitor, set up by mathematicians in Oxford, analysed more than 28,000 anonymous mobile phone bills and compared them to 8.5 million contracts on offer from all of the major networks, except Three .

Their research found that UK customers spend £484 million a year on out of allowance telephone calls per year, while £173 million is spent on out of allowance mobile internet data each year.

Furthermore, a total of £719 million is spent calling premium numbers and sending premium-rate texts each year, while £502 million is spent on calling and texting from abroad.
