Nokia has confirmed that its new Nokia N9 handset will not be launched in the UK and other major markets.
The flagship device, which is the Finnish company’s only smartphone powered by the MeeGo OS platform, will not be available in both the UK and the US, despite receiving some encouraging initial reviews.
A Nokia statement read: "Although we are delighted with the very positive reception that the Nokia N9 has received, here in the UK there are no plans to offer the Nokia N9 at present."
The mobile giant also revealed that its primary focus for the US market is solely based on models powered by Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform and not the Symbian, with the head of the company's US business, Chris Weber, stating that any Symbian success would be irrelevant if Nokia's Windows devices failed.
Unveiled last month, the N9 packs a host of great features, including an integrated 8 megapixel camera, up to 64 GB of storage, near-field communication technology and Nokia’s standard turn-by-turn navigation software. It has also won plaudits for its clean and modern user interface and sharp looks.
However the phone’s most notable feature is its ‘all-screen’ design – the usual home button is replaced with a universal touchscreen ‘swipe’ gesture that takes users back to the devices main screen from wherever they are in its operating system.
Marko Ahtisaari, Nokia's head of Design, said: "The details that make the Nokia N9 unique - the industrial design, the all-screen user experience, and the expressive Qt framework for developers - will evolve in future Nokia products ."
