Why the BlackBerry messaging system will not keep rioters protected

Just about everyone in the world over the past week has heard or seen about the violence riot that took England by storm over the last week and many of us will know that BBM, better known as BlackBerry Messenger, was one of the key instruments in organising and arranging numerous riots.

Even though numerous reports have indicated that BBM data is untraceable. BlackBerry has stated that the identities of those individuals who used BBM in relation to the recent riots will be divulged to the authorities.

Even though BBM does over a great deal more in terms of privacy and security in comparison to social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook it seems that the British police force will be able to use it to track down numerous individuals who helped coordinate and participate in the recent riots.

BBM works slightly different to social network sites. Individuals exchange their unique pin codes in a variety of forms and are then able to send a text to a contact or contacts rather than posting information on a social network.

Overall though the BlackBerry messaging service is a communication between two or more BlackBerry smartphones, the network provider has nothing to do with the user. The communications occur directly between the users' client software even though the BBM messages are routed via Research In Motion's servers.

BlackBerry has resisted calls to suspend BBM even though the service has a huge attraction to young adults due to its high level of security, low cost, speed and convenience.

In a recent statement BlackBerry has declared that it will work and cooperate with the authorities but they have refrained from answering specific questions.

It seems not that the untraceable attribute of the BBM messaging service is but an illusion.
