Google Maps is the most used connected mobile app in the UK, according to new research published by ComScore and mobile industry body the GSMA.
Figures from the groups show that more than 6.4 million mobile owners used the navigation app in April, making it by far the most popular connected app (apps that use the internet) in the country.
The term ‘connected apps’ means mobile applications that transfer data over an operator's network, ruling out apps used entirely or mainly over Wi-Fi such as BBC’s popular iPlayer.
Second place on the Connected Mobile Apps list went to Yahoo Weather, with 3.6m users in April, followed closely by Facebook (3.5m) in third place.
Google managed to grab four places in the top 20, including Google Mobile, YouTube and Google Earth, whilst UK broadcaster Sky managed to get a handful of its apps into the top 20, including Sky News, Sky Sports Live Football Score Centre, Sky Sports and Sky+ .
Other top 20 entrants include the eBay app, Yahoo Stocks, the ever-growing WhatsApp messenger, Skype, BBC News, Talking Tom Cat and the Rightmove estate agents app.
Commenting on the data, ComScore's vice-president of mobile, Jeremy Copp, said: "What we're seeing is that some media owners are following an app-centric strategy."
"For Sky, the vast proportion of their mobile content is consumed through their apps, and very little through the mobile browser. The BBC is at the opposite end of the spectrum with a mobile web-centric strategy, while eBay and Facebook mix up apps and browsing."
