The iPad2 was finally unveiled by Apple last night in a special media event in San Francisco.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who is taking a leave of absence from the company due to poor health, surprised many by turning up to launch the second-generation iPad, which is thinner, lighter and faster than its predecessor.
As many analysts had predicted, the new device features a dual-core processor and two cameras – one on the back that is capable of high definition (HD) video-recording and a front-facing camera for Face Time video chats (i.e. video calling).
There’s also the addition of a three-axis gyroscope to complement the accelerometer in gaming and other applications, as well as so-called 'Smart Covers', which can double as stands for the device.
Apple also used the event to announce iOS 4.3, the latest version of the operating system that powers the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. iOS 4.3 will be released in a week’s time.
The iPad 2 will officially go on sale in the US on March 11, with a worldwide roll-out scheduled for March 25. US prices range from $499 for a 16GB WiFi-only model to $829 for a 64GB version with both WiFi and 3G connectivity.
UK pricing is yet to be confirmed, although both Orange and T-Mobile have both confirmed that they will offer the tablet when it become available later this month.
