Tue, 31 May 2011

Nokia handsets have claimed the top two spots in a new list of the of most environment friendly mobile phones offered in the UK.

The mobile makerfs C6-01 andE7-00 devices came first and second in O2Œs independently verified Eco Rating Scheme, both receiving a score of 4.1 (out of 5) for a combination of their environmental impact, their contribution to sustainable living, and the ethical performance of the manufacturer.

Another Nokia handset, the C7-02, shared second place in the rankings with Samsung fs Galaxy Mini and Galaxy Ace smartphones and Sony Ericcssonfs X8 mobile . All four phones achieved a score of 4.

O2fs Eco Rating Scheme is part of the network operatorfs Think Big sustainability programme, which is aimed at educating customers on how to live sustainably through O2 products .

The rankings cover 90 per cent of the phones O2 sells and are based on data provided by handset manufacturers, such as the materials used in producing a handset, the features that reduce the need for other devices such as music players, and labour conditions in the supply chain.

"Although the environmental impact of a mobile phone may seem trivial when compared to say a car or fridge, when you consider the vast volumes of mobiles in circulation across the globe, their impact adds up," said Simon Lee-Smith, O2fs head of Devices.

"We know more and more customers want this level of product transparency, and wefre very grateful to the handset manufacturers for their engagement with Eco Rating."
