Asda Mobile is trialling a new £5 Pay As You Go (PAYG) tariff as it looks to attract cash-strapped consumers and increase its share of the mobile market.
The £5 deal is half the price of its standard £10 entry tariff and one of the cheapest on the market, with customers getting 100 minutes and 100 texts for £11 less than its standard tariff offering the same amount.
The new offer, which is only available this month, comes in light of a recent survey which suggests that fewer and fewer of Asdas customers, particularly 18-34 years olds, use landlines to make and receive calls are switching to mobiles exclusively.
In response to the findings, Asda has begun phasing out sales of landline phones in its stores to focus more on PAYG mobiles and feature-rich smartphones .
Asda Mobile buyer James McMurrough said: "Standing in one place to make a call just doesnt make sense anymore, nor does untangling the wire, so weve decided to hang up on sales of landline phones ."
"The truth is that mobiles are more powerful, more affordable and more convenient and there just isnt a compelling reason to have a landline phone anymore."
Vodafone is the supermarket's network provider and it promises 99 per cent UK coverage.
