A significant proportion of mobile phone users in the UK do not fully understand common mobile technology terms such as data roaming, 3G and WiFi, according to new research by GoodMobilePhone.co.uk.
The price comparison site surveyed 1,680 mobile owners in the UK and found that almost two-thirds (62 per cent) were confused by the term data roaming.
Only a quarter knew that the phrase refers to the ability to access mobile internet services, while more than half (52 per cent) thought it meant accessing emails while on the move.
The research also revealed that 56 per cent did not know the exact meaning of 3G, while 47 per cent were confused over the acronym MMS. A similar proportion (43 per cent) was puzzled by the term WiFi, while 28 per cent did not know the meaning of Bluetooth .
Interestingly, the majority of those surveyed (81 percent) said they were not given enough guidance on using all aspects of their phone when they purchased the handset, indicating sub-standard service from mobile retailers and network operators.
Commenting on the findings, Mark Owen, Managing Director of GoodMobilePhones.co.uk, said: "Data Roaming can be a bit of a minefield, and there are always horror stories of people running up hundreds of pounds on their bill whilst abroad, because they failed to take into account the increased charges that can apply when overseas."
"It's important that you make yourself aware of the extra charges that can apply before going abroad, and ensure that you take the necessary precautions to avoid racking up a huge bill!"
