O2 is a British telecommunications company that specialises in mobile phone services.
O2 was formed in 2001 following the split / demerger from British Telecom of its former mobile business, BT Cellnet. The split was part of BT’s plan to strengthen its financial position following over-expansion in the 1990s.
The company is one of the UK’s leading providers of mobile services to businesses and consumers across Britain, with 27.4 million customers having joined by the end of 2005.
However, the last two years have seen O2 fall behind in the subscriber race, and in the coverage stakes.
Other services provided include non-voice services – text messages / SMS, media messaging, games, video, news and music, as well as data connections via GPRS, 3G, 4G and WLAN.
- O2 offer contract, bundle and PAYG connections and a range of price plans.
- O2 offers a fixed tariff for roaming, so that you can predict what the roaming charges will be.
- O2’s coverage is widespread in the UK , claiming over 99% population coverage.
O2 also offers an ‘Email to Mobile ’ service. This allows you to have an email address that delivers messages to your handset by SMS.
Coverage Map
O2 have a brilliant web page: Coverage checker – that allows you to check the coverage in any given postcode area, and provides maps that also indicate the cell sites. The web gives any planned maintenance downtime information, details of where planned cells will be installed, and shows GPRS coverage.
O2 mostly uses GSM 900 but also uses 1800MHz frequencies to increase capacity
