Android Phone Sales Soar By 350 Per Cent

Sales of mobile phones running Google’s impressive Android operating system in the UK have soared by a staggering 350 per cent over the last three months, according to new figures from GfK Retail and Technology.

A recently published report by the research firm revealed that the huge rise in Q2 sales took Google Android’s share of the UK’s mobile phone contract market to 13.2 per cent at the end of June, up from just 3 per cent in March.

GfK analyst Megan Baldock said: "The figures suggest an increasing number of consumers are now asking for Android handsets by name. Operating systems are no longer simply a by-product but a key selling point in their own right."

The report noted that the increase in Android handset sales is "staggering", given that sales of contract smartphones in general rose by just 1 per cent during the second quarter.

The popularity of Google Android devices is largely being driven by the growing number of mobile phone makers that are adopting the operating system for their upcoming handsets.

Since the start of the year, mobile users have been treated to Google’s own-brand Nexus One smartphone, the HTC Legend and Desire handsets, Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10, the Motorola Milestone and the newly launched Samsung Galaxy S .
