Google’s Android mobile operating system is continuing to dominate the UK smartphone market, according to new data from market researchers Kantar Worldpanel.
The figures show that in the year to June 12, Android’s share of the market soared from just 10.7 per cent to 45.2 per cent.
By contrast, the UK market share of Nokia's Symbian platform fell from 32.7 per cent to 10.7 per cent, and is now behind Android, Apple’s iOS platform and BlackBerry producer RIM.
Apple’s slice of the smartphone sector declined by 12.3 per cent, with iPhones now making up just 18.3 per cent of the UK market, while BlackBerry maker RIM managed to gain market share, up from 19.4 per cent to 22 per cent.
According to the Kantar research, Android is now the most popular smartphone OS in six out of eight key mobile phone markets worldwide.
It also suggests that smartphone handsets will be owned by around half of Britain’s mobile users by mid- 2012.
